Fall Break Survival: The Week the Routine Disappears
School stops for a week. Work doesn't.
Fall break is the shortest gap in the school year with the fullest coverage problem. Some activities cancel for the week, some run anyway, and at least one has a makeup session nobody wrote down. The week arrives with a schedule that's half empty and half wrong.
Why fall break sneaks up
Summer gets planned for months. Fall break gets remembered about two weeks out, usually when the school newsletter mentions it.
The week itself is a patchwork of small questions. Is practice still on? Does the sitter come Tuesday or Wednesday? Who has the kids Thursday when both parents have meetings? Each question is small. Holding all of them at once is the job, and it lands on whoever holds the schedule. It's the same pattern as managing multiple kids' schedules in a normal week, compressed into five days with no routine to lean on.
A one-evening plan for break week
Confirm what's actually canceled. Team practices usually pause. Private lessons often don't. Makeup sessions appear where practices used to be. One message to each coach or studio now beats a surprise on Thursday.
Map the coverage gaps. Go day by day: which days have a sitter, a grandparent, a camp day, or a parent working from home. Write a name next to every day. A day with no name is the problem to solve this week, not that week.
Plan one real thing. A day trip, a matinee, an afternoon at the orchard. One planned thing the kids can look forward to gives the week a shape, and it costs less than five improvised outings.
Hand the week to whoever's helping. The sitter or Grandma needs times, addresses, and who's doing pickup. A forwarded group text carries none of that. This is the "can you handle Thursday" problem, and it's one of the five questions in what a shared calendar can't tell you.
How Cadence handles it
In Cadence, each activity holds its own schedule, location, people, and notes, with season start and end dates. When a practice pauses for break week, the change lives on the activity, so the week you see is the week that's actually happening.
For the handoff, the Weekly Summary turns break week into a shareable PDF: every day, every activity, every pickup, on one page the sitter or Grandma can keep. Cadence also syncs to the calendar on your phone, so whoever shares that calendar stays current without a briefing.
Fall break is five days. The plan takes one evening. The difference between the two versions of that week is who's holding it: one tired parent's memory, or a page everyone can see.
Cadence is free for 14 days on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android. Download on the App Store or get it on Google Play.
